Swedish archaeologist, ethnographer and explorer. His many expeditions through Asia were described in a number of popularized (and immensely popular) accounts, as well as in scientific reports. He was educated in Germany before the First World War, and remained loyal to Germany also during the Nazi period, when he personally met Hitler. These connections have made him the object of some public debate.
