American musical anthropologist, writer, cinematographer, jazz musician and music producer. Ph.D. 1979 from Indiana University (published as Sound and sentiment: Birds, weeping, poetics, and song in Kaluli expression, 1982. Fieldwork among the Kaluli (Bosawi rainforest region) of Papua New Guinea, in Greek Macedonia and among Romani. Prominent among his musical productions is Voices of the Rainforest (1991, Rykodisc).
